Short answer: LinkedIn publishes no cap for sent messages. Sales Farmer, a LinkedIn and email prospecting tool, defaults to 20 invitations a day within 100 a week, plus 30 first messages and 100 follow-ups a day. LinkedIn bans automation tools, so these caps are there to go easy on your account, not to make it immune.

What does LinkedIn say about limits?
LinkedIn confirms that invitation limits exist but gives no figure. Its help page says a restriction typically lasts one week, that it cannot lift or shorten it, and that withdrawing pending invitations does not lift it (LinkedIn Help, accessed November 2, 2026).
On automation the position is clear: LinkedIn does not allow third-party software that automates its site, browser extensions included. It says affected accounts can be restricted or shut down (LinkedIn Help, accessed November 2, 2026). Nothing is "risk free", and it is better to know that before launching a campaign.
What is the difference between an invitation, a first message and a follow-up?
Sales Farmer counts three things separately, because LinkedIn does not read them the same way.
The invitation is the connection request. The first message opens the conversation once the invitation is accepted. A follow-up is any message in a conversation that is already open: a nudge after your first message, or a reply to someone who wrote to you.
Replying to a person who wrote to you is not a first contact. That is why follow-ups have a much higher cap than first messages.
What are the default caps?
| Counter | Default cap |
|---|---|
| Invitations | 20 per day |
| Invitations, rolling week | 100 over seven days |
| First messages | 30 per day |
| Follow-ups and replies | 100 per day |
The weekly cap counts over a rolling seven days, not the calendar: twenty invitations a day over five days already reach 100. The daily and weekly caps apply together, and the lower one wins.
These values are cautious estimates. LinkedIn publishes no figure: the 100 invitations a week come from what several tool vendors advise, not from a LinkedIn rule. You can set your own caps by hand in the account settings, and the ones you choose stay yours.
What about a recent account?
If you tick "My LinkedIn account is less than 3 months old", sending ramps up over four weeks instead of starting at the cap.
| Week | Invitations per day | First messages per day |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 | 0 |
| 2 | 10 | 5 |
| 3 | 15 | 10 |
| 4 | 15 | 10 |
No first message in week one: that week's connections get theirs the following week. After that, the account's own caps apply. An account that restarts after more than seven days without sending repeats the ramp, from week 2.
How is sending spread over the day?
Sends are spaced at random: one invitation every few dozen minutes rather than a burst of twenty in five minutes. You choose the active time slots, and actions only run during those hours.
The extension works from your browser, so your computer must be on for sends to go out. A burst is what looks most like a robot.
How do you choose your own caps?
Start with the defaults, then watch two numbers: your acceptance rate and your reply rate. If both hold after two weeks, you have no reason to push. If acceptance falls, lower the daily cap before you change anything else.
Keep the weekly cap in view more than the daily one. A strong Monday can use most of the week, and a rolling week is what you are really working against. Quality matters as much as volume: ignored or reported invitations count against you, whatever the cap.
What stops sending?
Sales Farmer pauses sending in three cases, with a one sentence reason:
- LinkedIn refuses a send and announces a reached limit: once is enough;
- three refusals of the same kind within six hours;
- an acceptance rate under 10% on at least 50 invitations sent more than seven days ago.
A pause is not a breakdown. Look at your messages and your target first: a low acceptance rate almost always comes from there. Our article on acceptance and reply rates gives benchmarks.

FAQ
How many LinkedIn messages can I send per day?
LinkedIn gives no figure. In Sales Farmer the default is 30 first messages and 100 follow-ups a day, which you can lower.
How many invitations per day on LinkedIn?
By default, 20 a day and 100 over a rolling week. LinkedIn does not publish its own limit, and some accounts tolerate less.
Can my account be restricted despite these caps?
Yes. LinkedIn bans automation and can restrict an account at any time. Caps reduce exposure, they do not remove it.
Can a new account send as much?
Better to declare an account under three months old: the ramp-up then limits sending to 5 invitations a day in the first week.
What happens if I go over LinkedIn's limit?
LinkedIn restricts sending invitations, usually for a week. Sales Farmer pauses sending as soon as it gets that signal.
