In short: you can find prospects on LinkedIn without Sales Navigator. Standard search already offers useful filters (location, company, industry) and accepts Boolean operators. Across 11,000 campaigns, Expandi measures a 1.3-point acceptance gap in favor of Sales Navigator, with no difference in replies. The limits are the number of results and the commercial use limit.
Can you prospect without Sales Navigator?
Yes, and the available data shows little gap. Expandi compared nearly 11,000 campaigns fed either by an imported file or by a Sales Navigator search, covering 2.2 million people. Acceptance is 18.5% for the file and 19.8% for Sales Navigator, and the reply rate is identical (Expandi, State of LinkedIn Outreach H2 2026, consulted on 7 October 2026).
Expandi concludes you should choose on cost, integration with your tool and list availability, not on a promise of better conversion. A tool vendor publishes this figure. It covers automated campaigns, not hand prospecting.
What does LinkedIn's free search allow?
More than you might think. In the People tab, you filter by connection degree, location, current or past company, school and industry. There are also "connections of", "followers of", profile language and keywords (LinkedIn Help, consulted on 7 October 2026). The only filter the page flags as Premium is "actively hiring".
The constraint is volume. A free account sees at most 250 results per search, or 25 pages, according to the help page on search results (LinkedIn Help, consulted on 7 October 2026). For a longer list, multiply the searches: one per city, per industry or per company size.
How does Boolean search refine results?
It combines words with operators. LinkedIn accepts AND, OR and NOT, quotation marks for an exact phrase and parentheses for grouping. The three operators must be typed in uppercase; brackets, braces and asterisks are not supported (LinkedIn Help, consulted on 7 October 2026).
An example to target sales managers at small companies:
("sales director" OR "sales manager") AND (SME OR "small business") NOT intern
Check the first pages by hand before launching anything: a query that is too wide brings back profiles outside your target, who will ignore your request.
What is the commercial use limit?
A monthly cap on profile searches on a free account whose activity looks like prospecting or hiring. LinkedIn words it this way: your activity suggests commercial use. The counter resets at midnight Pacific time on the 1st of each month. Searching by name, browsing your direct connections and job searches do not count (LinkedIn Help, consulted on 7 October 2026).
LinkedIn does not publish the number of searches. It offers to raise the limit with Premium Business, Recruiter Lite or Sales Navigator. Have a plan B: the sources below do not go through search.
Where can you find prospects outside search?
Among people who are moving or already reacting to your topic. Three leads work without Sales Navigator.
- Reactions around a post. People who like or comment on an expert's or a competitor's post care about the subject. See our article on watching competitors.
- Job changes. A person who just started in a role often looks for new tools. The guide on job change outreach details the message.
- The "followers of" filter. It restricts the search to the followers of a given profile: an expert in your field, an executive of a neighboring company.
In each case, define who you are aiming at first. Our method to define your target and build a list avoids lists that are too wide.
When is Sales Navigator worth it?
When your search volume goes beyond what the free version allows: Sales Navigator raises the commercial use limit. The conversion gaps are small according to Expandi, so the reason to pay is your time and your search volume, not the promise of a better rate.
We detail prices and the cases where the subscription makes sense in our article Sales Navigator price in 2026.
How does Sales Farmer import your list?
Three ways. A search by job title and industry, directly in Launch a campaign. The extraction of profiles from a LinkedIn or Sales Navigator search, where Sales Navigator is not required (extraction). Or the people spotted around the profiles you watch.
A useful reminder: LinkedIn's terms also forbid automated copying of the service by extensions, which covers extraction. No tool removes that risk. Launch a small list first, check it, then widen. In Automatic mode, you see the reason for each contact and approve the messages before sending.
